Ms. Jean: A Remarkable Road to Recovery

“She eventually regained the ability to speak and breathe on her own.”

At BridgePoint Hospital, recovery is not just a goal, it’s a journey built on expert care, collaboration, and patient resilience. Ms. Jean’s experience is a powerful example of what happens when all of these elements come together.

Admission and Initial Condition

Ms. Jean was admitted to BridgePoint Hospital on April 14th, following a medically complex hospitalization. She arrived on a ventilator, lethargic, disoriented, and required full assistance from two caregivers for basic movements in bed. Her ability to sit upright was limited to just a few minutes, with little head and trunk control.

Despite her fragile state, Ms. Jean brought with her a quiet determination and a clear goal, to regain her independence.

Breathing Freely: Respiratory Therapy Progress

Immediately upon admission, Ms. Jean began working closely with our Respiratory Therapy team. She was initially fully dependent on a ventilator, but with attentive care, including airway management and gradual weaning trials, she began making progress.

Through the use of speaking valve trials and “capping” (testing her ability to breathe without assistance), she eventually regained the ability to speak and breathe on her own. On May 2nd, she was successfully removed from her tracheostomy tube and now requires only supplemental oxygen.

“We are proud to have played a role in Ms. Jean’s recovery and look forward to her continued progress.” — Respiratory Therapy Team

Regaining Strength: Physical and Occupational Therapy

Starting April 15th, Ms. Jean participated in a comprehensive therapy plan, including Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, and the Restorative Nursing Program. Initially very weak, she needed maximum assistance for all movement and had difficulty sitting upright or maintaining head control.

With consistent therapy five days a week, Ms. Jean steadily regained strength. Her sitting tolerance improved to 20 minutes at the bedside, and she progressed to sitting upright in a wheelchair for 2–3 hours each day.

She also worked with the Speech Therapy team to improve her ability to communicate and swallow, an essential milestone that contributed to her overall progress and respiratory recovery.

“It was a privilege to help Ms. Jean regain strength and confidence. Her progress has inspired our entire team.” — Rehabilitation Services Team

24/7 Compassion: Nursing Care

Throughout her stay, our nursing team provided round-the-clock care—administering medications, managing wounds, monitoring her breathing, and offering emotional support. The nursing staff played a key role in coordinating with all departments to ensure Ms. Jean’s care was seamless and patient centered.

Planning the Next Step: Case Management Support

As Ms. Jean made consistent progress, she was accepted for continued recovery at United Medical Rehab (UMR), where she would receive additional inpatient rehabilitation. Our Case Management team coordinated the transition, ensuring that every detail of her discharge plan was tailored to support her ultimate goal: returning home and living independently.

“It’s been a privilege to be part of Ms. Jean’s journey. Her goal is clear, get stronger and return home, and we are confident she is well on her way.” — Case Management Team

Looking Ahead

Ms. Jean’s journey is a powerful reminder of what is possible when expert care meets unwavering determination. We are honored to have been part of her recovery and look forward to seeing all that she continues to accomplish.
